North Beats South in Chesapeake Bowl

by Jeff Fisher
Maryland High School Football Huddle

At the start, it looked like Friday night's second annual Chesapeake Bowl all-star football game wasn't going to be a typical all-star football game with the defenses leading the way.

With each team returning kickoffs for touchdown before either offense stepped-on the field, it looked like the game was going to be a high scoring affair at South River High School in Edgewater, Maryland. By the time the crowd had watched the North squad take a 21-7 on the South stars in the first 12 minutes, many thought they were going to see a repeat of last year's offensive game won by the South 30-27.

However, after the first 12 minutes, things returned to normal with both defenses stepping-up, and the North holding-on to win 28-17.

The contest itself, nicknamed "The Civil War" pitted senior high school football stars from Maryland, Virginia, Washington DC and West Virginia (South All-Stars) against a North team made-up of players from Delaware, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

The game began with a bang when the North's Nate Smith (Archbishop Wood HS - PA) returned the opening kickoff 90-yards for a score. Not to be outdone, Ronald Darby (Potomac HS - MD) answered with a 77-yards return of his own to tie the game at 7.

The rest of the first quarter featured two teammates from Pittsburgh Central Catholic (PA), who have given their verbal commitments to playing their college ball at the University of Maryland next year.

Quarterback Perry Hills ran for 82 yards and threw for a touchdown in the first quarter to stake the North squad to a 21-7 lead. Hills' teammate Anthony Nixon set-up the first offensive touchdown when he picked-off a pass and returned it to the South 28 yard line.

The pick led to a five-yard touchdown run by Sharif Smith (Furness HS - PA) and a 14-7 North lead. Quarterback Josh Weakland (State College HS - PA) extended the lead to 21-7 with a 28-yard touchdown pass to Ray Cathie (Imani Christian - PA).

Late in the first half, Weakland hooked-up with Bruce Mapp (West Catholic HS - PA) on a 61-yard touchdown that gave the North a 28-10 halftime lead.

Aside from Darby's kickoff return, the South's only other first half score came on a 37-yard field goal by Austin Grebe (North Stafford HS - VA).

After a scoreless third quarter, the South tried to mount a comeback. The South cut the lead to 28-17 with 13:01 to go in the game when Ben Onett (St. John's - DC) threw a 65-yard touchdown strike to Wes Brown (Good Counsel - MD).

However, after that, the North squad used a strong ground game to run out the clock and take the victory.

Smith, who has given his verbal to West Virginia, was named the game's MVP.

Old Mill record-setting running back Rob Chesson is the 2011 Maryland Offensive Player of the Year.

Chesson, who set a state record for touchdowns in a season with 49, led the Patriots to the state's 4A championship.

Good Counsel defensive back Stefon Diggs was named the state's Defensive Player of the Year.

Both Diggs and Chesson are also members of the 20th annual Consensus All-State team that was announced today.

River Hill head coach Brian Van Deusen, who led his school to the 3A state title earlier this month, shared Coach of the Year honors with Good Counsel's Rob Milloy, who's team finished high in most national polls after an undefeated season.

Five players repeated as all-state selections. They are: Gilman's Cyrus Jones and Brian Gaia, Dunbar's Deon-Tay McManus, Urbana's Colton Kmetz and Diggs.

Maryland High School Football Huddle

It was a perfect day for the McDonogh School at the inaugural Baltimore Ravens 7-on-7 Passing Jamboree Tournament at M&T Bank Stadium on Friday.

The Rams, who were 6-4 last season, shocked everyone by beating Good Counsel in overtime for the championship.  Good Counsel is ranked #15 in MaxPreps.com's Preseason Top 25 Early Contenders Poll.

McDonogh won the championship when Jabri Weems caught a 33-yard touchdown pass from Joe Jorgensen on the final play of the game.

The Rams beat North Hagerstown in the first round of the single-elimination tournament and then advanced to the final with a seminfinal win over DeMatha.

DeMatha bounced back to win the bronze medal game beating Poly.  Briar Woods took fifth place with an overtime win over River Hill.  7th place when to Frederick with a victory over North Hagerstown.

One of America's top high school football programs has turned to a 27-year old alum to be its new head football coach.

DeMatha has named 2002 grad Elijah Brooks as the replacement for long-time coach Bill McGregor, who resigned earlier this year after 29-years in-charge of the Stags.

Brooks, who played running back for DeMatha, has been a member of McGregor's staff since the fall of 2007 after graduating from William & Mary.

McGregor, who resigned March 28th, led DeMatha to a record of 278-40-3 in his tenure as head coach.  More than 350 of McGregor's players received Division I or I-AA scholarships.

McGregor was a guest on my NHSCA Sports Hour on April 3rd.

Maryland High School Football Huddle

Organizers of the I-95 Kickoff Classic, which features high school football teams from Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C., were so happy with last year's four-game event, that they've decided to add four more games to the 2011 schedule.

The game will be played over a three-day period starting on September 1st at Bowie State and Morgan State Universities.

One of the highlights will be a game between Virginia power Oscar Smith and Gilman on September 2nd. Gilman has won three Maryland state championships in the last five years.  Oscar Smith has lost only two regular season games in the past seven years.

Another highlight will be a rematch of the 2010 I-95 Kickoff Classic game between DeMatha and Loyola on Saturday.  DeMatha will be playing its first season in 29 years without head coach Bill McGregor, who resigned earlier this year.  DeMatha won last year's game 45-31.

Then there's the public vs. private school match-up between Baltimore City champ Patterson and Archbishop Curley also on Saturday.

Here's the schedule...

Thursday, September 1st
at Bowie State

5PM - Mt. St. Joseph vs. Friendship Collegiate Academy (DC)
7:30 PM - St. John's (DC) vs. Calvert Hall

Friday, September 2nd

After Nearly Three Decades, DeMatha in Market for New Football Coach

by Jeff Fisher
Maryland High School Football Huddle

After 29-years and 280 wins against only 39 losses, Bill McGregor is leaving the DeMatha sideline.

McGregor has resigned after a distinguished career that saw him send over 350 players on to college football with Division I scholarships. His teams won 18 Washington Catholic Athletic Conference titles.

In 2004, McGregor was named the NFL's National Coach of the Year. Eight of his former players have played in the NFL. At the start of the 2009 NFL season, DeMatha led American high schools with five former Stags on NFL opening day rosters.
